Jamie Johnston Jamie plays Peter Stone on Degrassi. here's his latest IMterview with The-Mary:   -Jamie-: hi The-Mary: hey! how was yr audition this morning? -Jamie-: it was cool, but i think i was supposed to look 20 so.... i don't know about that The-Mary: aww.. do people give you that "you look so young!" thing? like strangers when they find out your age? -Jamie-: no, but the part was for a medical student, and i was the only one there under 30 lol The-Mary: haha. awesome -Jamie-: lately people have been estimating that i'm like 18 so... maaaaaaybe i could be a med student -Jamie-: anyways.. The-Mary: you could be a prodigy! -Jamie-: yea, i skipped high school! The-Mary: so ok: digging in: i just read your Alloy playlist The-Mary: and it is awesome. -Jamie-: yeaaah heehe The-Mary: let's talk about the mars volta. -Jamie-: yes, lets! The-Mary: ok. so, people seem to have really firm reactions to them, either love or hate The-Mary: did you love them the first time you heard them? is that just "your noise"? -Jamie-: yeah, i was on a plane from france and my friend said she "had" to give me the cd so i listened to it while she was listening to my mp3s, and right away it reminded me of these nightmares i used to have, but once i got over that, it was really cool. all their songs go perfectly into the next song. like when i'm listening to an album and it's on shuffle, at the end of the song i sing the lyrics for the next song you know? The-Mary: totally The-Mary: it's weird how some things just hit the right frequency in your head... the way people "recognize" something in a band when they first hear them. btw, my friend jon is the drummer, so i'm fully biased -Jamie-: hold on -Jamie-: THE drummer? The-Mary: the jon theodore -Jamie-: o -Jamie-: m -Jamie-: g The-Mary: he is a really, really cool dude. a really good person. -Jamie-: that's so crazy. i'm in shock right now The-Mary: you play guitar, right? -Jamie-: yeah The-Mary: how long have you been playing? -Jamie-: i started when i was like 10 or something, but my teacher moved away so i haven't had a lesson in a few years. The-Mary: bah, lessons. who needs 'em. :) The-Mary: ever try to like, play along with omar [from the Mars Volta]? -Jamie-: yeah, i can't play what he plays, but sometimes i add a little bit in, and it sounds awesome The-Mary: oh wow! that sounds fun! now i wish i could play guitar! -Jamie-: i'm sure u can. it'll come to u after a while The-Mary: i'm more of a chair dancer/air guitarist, ha. ok, what's the last live show you went to? -Jamie-: i went to Rain (the beatles experience) The-Mary: what's that? a cover band, or like a laser show or something? -Jamie-: it's a cover band, but in between songs they pretend they are the real beatles. it's kinda funny, but they play the songs perfectly The-Mary: oh wow. a total experience, that's awesome. The-Mary: ok, so, degrassi The-Mary: when you joined the cast, was it weird at all walking into this sort of already-formed tight-knit circle? -Jamie-: everyone was cool, but obviously i wasn't 'one of them' right away. but as time went on, it felt like i'd been there the whole time The-Mary: which is probably what it's like to transfer into a high school, i'm guessing. -Jamie-: exactly The-Mary: do you hang with any of them off-set? -Jamie-: sometimes we get together. we've all been really busy though The-Mary: i've always wondered: is there any sort of unspoken rivalry between the guys about who gets the most girl fan love? or a spoken rivalry even? -Jamie-: whenever anyone mentions that to any of us, we just laugh. it's not an issue. The-Mary: i know this is the worst interview question ever, but what's it LIKE? to have strangers have such a strong feeling about you? esp based on this character that may or may not be anything like you? -Jamie-: it's strange, to tell you the truth, but when i'm approached, it is always a nice experience, since they already like me, i don't have to impress anyone lol The-Mary: haha. does anyone ever give you grief about what peter did to manny? -Jamie-: this one girl at my school STILL does and it's been months. i think she just does it as a joke now, but i pretend to be offended anyways The-Mary: hahahaha. that girl just likes you. sayin'. -Jamie-: thanks -Jamie-: lol The-Mary: what's your take on peter? is he a bad guy, misunderstood, just made a mistake? The-Mary: i always kinda liked that he really showed remorse for it.. -Jamie-: it's fun playing a 'bad boy' - but peter isn't completely bad. there are too many sides of everyone to narrow a character down to just 'bad', 'good', or whatever... The-Mary: yeah, which is kinda what degrassi is all about i guess. it's like, every character on there has made one huge embarrassing mistake or another, they're all human... The-Mary: have you ever let a girl come between you and a friend? -Jamie-: no, it almost happened once, but i thought everything out logically and it wouldn't have been worth it The-Mary: damn, that's some strong thinking. how long ago was that? -Jamie-: this year -Jamie-: actually, this school year -Jamie-: so last year lol The-Mary: nice work. -Jamie-: ;) The-Mary: do you have a gf now? some girl on alloy named kayla said she's your girlfriend. -Jamie-: lol kayla is not my girlfriend. a real girlfriend wouldn't post like that on the internet The-Mary: that's what i was thinking, what girl wouldn't get dumped immediately for doing that? The-Mary: so, cagily avoiding the "have one now" question? -Jamie-: sorry, i'm listening to jon right now The-Mary: haha awesome! -Jamie-: lol The-Mary: have you seen them live? -Jamie-: yeah with system [of a down]. i was the only person there who didn't know system, but loved volta. everyone was asking who they were. they are sooooooo crazy. have u seen them with the lantern thing? The-Mary: no, what's that? -Jamie-: they had this cool lighting effect, i was gonna say, don't you think it was begging for them to play drunkship of lanterns? but u didn't see it The-Mary: HA, that's a good point though The-Mary: i love that you went to that tour and didn't go to see system. jon said they got SO MUCH GRIEF on that tour. The-Mary: (but the soad guys love them, just grief from the soad fans i mean. booing and so forth) -Jamie-: yeah, i can see that, i wished the band before volta dropped dead so they could go on lol The-Mary: hahahah. man it ain't easy being a rock star. The-Mary: until it is. The-Mary: and then eventually it isn't again. -Jamie-: wise The-Mary: same with being an actor probably! -Jamie-: yeah, totally -Jamie-: my mom says when you're hot you're hot, when you're not, you're not The-Mary: so, so true. alright back to girls... is it important that a girl be able to tell you on the plane from france "you have to hear this band?" is that a good quality in a lady? -Jamie-: nooooo, because they might be like 'listen to this cd, its Spice Girls rarities!" lol The-Mary: HAHAH The-Mary: but i mean, is the best way for a girl to get your attention by being straight up cool? like, would you rather bro down with a girl, or have her be this rarified Girl Person that's a mystery to you? -Jamie-: they both work. i guessssssss The-Mary: it's better when it's both?
